Biography: 

Manuela Melucci was born in Taranto on October 10th, 1977. She got the Laurea summa cum laude in Chemistry at the University of Bologna in 2000. From 2000 to 2001 she worked at the CNR- Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM) within the EU research project Dedicated eleCtronic noses and air polLutant scrubbErs for enhANced performance of medium/large size AIR conditioning system-(CE-FP5 NNE5-CLEAN-AIR, Advisors: Dr. Leonello Dori and Dr. Piera Maccagnani). In 2001 she joined the thiodesign group of ISOF to work on the design and synthesis of functional organic materials for organic electronics applications. In 2005 she obtained the PhD in Chemistry from University of Bologna (Advisor Dr. Giovanna Barbarella). During the PhD she was awarded with the Marco Polo scholarship for young researcher (Alma UE- University of Bologna) to carry out part of her PhD research at the Laboratoire d’Ingénierie Moléculaire et Matériaux Organiques (IMMO)-Groupe Systèmes Conjugués Linéaires Université d’Angers, France (supervisors Dr. Jean Roncali, Prof. Pierre Frere). Here she worked on the synthesis of new thiophene-based materials for photovoltaic applications (M. Melucci, et al, Molecular Engineering of Hybrid π-Conjugated Oligomers Combining 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and Thiophene-(S,S)-dioxide units Tetrahedron, 2007, 63, 9774-9783).
From 2005 to 2009 she worked within the EU research project EU-NMP-IP 500355 NAnoscale Integrated processing of self-organizing Multifunctional Organic materials (NAIMO). In this framework, in 2006 she visited the Melville Laboratories for Polymer Synthesis of the University of Cambridge, UK) where she developed new functional monomers to be tethered onto inorganic surface by surface initiated polymerization reactions (Prof. Wilhelm T.S. Huck). In 2009 she was appointed researcher at the CNR-Institute of (ICCOM) in Florence where she worked on the functionalization of graphene oxide with functional organic molecules in collaboration with Dr. V. Palermo (Nanochemistry Lab, ISOF).
In 2012 she joined ISOF where she is currently group leader of the division for the synthesis of π-conjugated organic and hybrid materials at ISOF. She is also scientific consultant for ETC-srl (start-up of the SAES. Getters group) and participant of the ongoing European project FREECATs” - Doped carbon nanostructures as metal-free catalysts. (Small or medium scale focused research projects - FP7, NMP-2011-2.2-4 Novel materials for replacement of strategic or scarce raw materials (platinum group metals and rare earths).
She is author of nearly 40 publications (corresponding author of 16 since 2006) and book chapters (H-index (June 2012), 15).
Her current fields of interest are as follows:

  • Design and synthesis of organic and hybrid materials for applications in organic electronics: tailored π-conjugated oligomers with light emitting and charge transport properties to be used as active layer in field effect transistors, light emitting field effect transistors, light emitting diodes, solar concentrators and solar cells (Chem.
